“Christmas by Starlight” aired on November 26, 2020 on the Hallmark Channel and starred Kimberly Sustad and Paul Campbell. The story idea was Sustad’s and she approached Campbell a couple of years ago about turning it into a movie. He got to work and wrote the screenplay. Gary Yates was tasked with directing the film, which was filmed in Winnipeg (filling in for Chicago this time around) and wrapped filming just a month prior to airing on our TVs!
In a nutshell
I enjoyed this one very much. I especially oved that the comedy wasn’t over the top at all (such as the overt playfulness of One Royal Holiday or The Christmas House), but just natural and part of the story and part of the characters’ natural selves.
Plot of “Christmas by Starlight”
When her family’s beloved eatery, The Starlight Café, is slated for demolition, Annie vows to put a stop to it before Christmas.
Actors
I love Sustad and Campbell. I love Sustad and Campbell together. I love Sustad and Campbell together in a movie their are vested (and invested) in. I also really enjoyed Darren Martens, who played William’s right hand man, Lyle. This is his fourth Hallmark movie, having started with the network in 2016’s “Journey Back to Christmas.”
Chemistry
There are a few couples in the Hallmark universe that go perfectly together. Wagner and Polaha. Chabert and Elliott. DeLoach and Rady. And Sustad and Campbell. Perfect fits.
Tropes
Annie had a snow globe from her childhood, as well as a cute dog. The family-owned diner was under threat of teardown by big time developer. We saw some empty coffee cups. And we have a fundraising gala to plan with less than a week to plan it!
Annie’s parents built a gingerbread house (two stories tall!). We also had some Christmas tree shopping. We got to see some ugly Christmas sweaters at Ted’s Christmas party (and I love how Ted saw her sweater, which made him and his wife go change into one as well). When they left the party we had some lovely CGI snow.
Annie and William went ice skating (and it was fun seeing the actors actually skate). Later on we saw them decorate a Christmas tree.

Did I Hear/See That Right?
In the scene where William makes Annie a grilled cheese sandwich, the ONLY thing I could focus on was the vast amount of vegetables laying on the shelves behind them. A couple things went through my mind. 1) Restaurants would get fined for leaving fresh food out in the open all night and 2) it’s a BREAKFAST diner that focuses on waffles. What do they need all those veggies for? They can only make so many omelets in a day.
They danced. To “O Holy Night.” That’s just as bad as dancing to “Silent Night.” THAT’S NOT A SONG TO DANCE TO.
Feelgoods
The focus on Annie’s adoption was a pleasant surprise. And I loved how the script allowed that storyline to bloom throughout the movie as Annie continued to share her story with William as they got to know each other better. The subject of adoption never became hackneyed or overwrought, which can sometimes happen when Hallmark tries to hit more serious topics.
As I said earlier, I loved the comedy in this one. Paul Campbell is hilarious on his social media accounts, and I knew that would come through in the screenplay. Add in the chemistry that Sustad and Campbell have together, and I really enjoyed the funny bits.
I also really enjoyed the singer in the diner. Her name is Maria Aragon and she hails from Winnipeg where the movie was filmed. She toured with Lady Gaga a few years ago and is a great singer in her own right.
The scene between Annie and her dad (played by the excellent Bruce Dawson) after she found out that William was still planning to demolish the diner was very sweet and so well done. I loved that scene.
Re-watchability
For Campbell and Sustad alone I’ll watch this one again.

In any event, what did you think of “Christmas by Starlight”? Comment below and let me know!
Love, love, love the chemistry between these two actors. I first noticed their special bond in A Godwink Christmas.
Most all of your movies, new and old, have the background music so loud that one can hardly hear the speaking parts. Even the commercials are too loud with the music. Many times I just change the channel
as it is very annoying.
Love the pairing of Kimberley Sustad and Paul Campbell…Pretty much will watch anything they are in together!
Loved the young lady singing Silent Night and O Holy Night in the cafe, but can’t find out who she is.
Thank you for making my Christmas wonderful…I watch all the movies from October until mid January when they end….love it!
Her name is Marie Aragon, although I can’t find her version of Silent Night, which I love.
This is my favourite Hallmark Christmas movie. Paul Campbells and Kimberley Sustad have the best chemistry of all the Hallmark couples. Tyler Haynes with almost everyone is excellent too. Love those Canadians.
My favorite of all ( I even bought it) was the Non- Christmas movie “Wedding Every Weekend “. Just great chemistry & humor between Campbell & Sustad. If they’re in anything, I’ll watch ‘em.
