A Preview of “Love Under the Stars”

I know this is a last-minute post, but this weekend (Sunday, September 6) we have a “new” movie airing on Hallmark Channel, entitled “Love Under the Stars.” This 2015 movie stars Wes Brown (“Christmas at Graceland”) and Ashley Newbrough (“Small Town Christmas” and A Merry Christmas Match), with an assist from Barry Bostick.  It’s not necessarily new to Hallmark (I believe this might have aired on HC in 2015 when it was initially released, and is being brought out of the vault), but it’s new to ME as I don’t recall seeing it the first time around.

“Love Under the Stars” was written by Erik Patterson and Jessica Scott (who also co-wrote 2016’s “Love on a Limb” and 2017’s “Love at First Bark”), and directed by Terry Ingram, who has directed too many Hallmark projects to count.

Here is the plot of “Love Under the Stars” as listed on the HMM website:

Young-at-heart graduate student Becca strikes up an unlikely friendship with Emily, a quiet girl who recently lost her mother. During their time together, Becca helps Emily come out of her shell and cope with her loss, and Emily teaches Becca more about grown up responsibility. When a romance develops between Becca and Emily’s father Nate, they must learn to balance their new relationship with his responsibility to Emily and Becca’s responsibility to finish her thesis for her supportive college advisor, Walt.

Before I make any more comments, I want to show you the sneak peek of what we can expect tomorrow night:

I REALLY like that preview.  First, since this movie was made in 2015 it has the potential to have some real substance behind it.  I think in recent years Hallmark movies tend to sway more towards complete escapism with lower stakes.  That’s why movies like Two Turtle Doves (which is the gold standard for Hallmark movies in my opinion) come along and really pack a punch with the emotional vulnerability and powerful storytelling.  The preview shows legitimate gravitas regarding not wanting to rush into a relationship for the sake of a child who just lost her mother.  I appreciate that this movie appears to take that kind of situation more seriously.

What do you think?  Are you excited about “Love Under the Stars?”

I've been a fan of Hallmark movies for as long as I can remember. In 2018 I decided it was finally time to write about it, and thus this website was born.
