“A Glenbrooke Christmas” aired on December 12, 2020 on the Hallmark Movies & Mysteries Channel. One my screenwriting faves, Julie Sherman Wolfe, co-wrote the screenplay with David Golden. The movie is loosely based on the book Secrets by Robin Jones Gunn (affiliate link). David I. Strasser directed the movie, which was filmed in the Vancouver area.
In a nutshell
I really liked the movie a lot. It had a great script, a great leading couple, and plenty of Christmas.
Plot of “A Glenbrooke Christmas”
Longing to be accepted for herself and not just her wealth, heiress Jessica heads to the small town of Glenbrooke, where she discovers the joys of a simple Christmas, community, and maybe even love.
Actors
SO HAPPY to have Antonio Cupo back on my TV screen! He hasn’t been in a Hallmark Christmas movie for a couple of years (although he did produce Love Under the Olive Tree and A Brush With Love). I was happy when he popped up on the short-lived “Blood & Treasure” last year, but it wasn’t enough.
Autumn Reeser is always a winner in my book. She is a favorite of many Hallmarkies for good reason. In this movie she hit all the right notes as a woman who wanted to reconnect with her parents in her own small way, while connecting with the local citizens at the same time.
Chemistry
Reeser and Cupo have worked together before, and it shows. These two are great together and I thoroughly enjoyed every scene they had together. Not only that, but the entire cast worked well from the grandpa to the students at the art center.
Tropes
A big city drone shot opened the movie. Does it count as tree decorating when the lead character puts a single decoration on a tree? We learned that Jessica’s parents are no longer alive, and got to see a Christmas gala in the first 10 minutes instead of the last ten! We also had a tree lighting the first ten minutes. The whole movie centers around a big city woman going to a small town for the holidays.
We had some product placement thanks to GMC trucks. We also had the drone shot of a single car on a winter mountain road. When Jessica arrived in Glenbrooke we saw carolers on the side of the street. The house of her host in Glenbrooke had a very different type of front porch – it was more of a side porch, and I loved it. Then the house Jessica actually stayed in had the traditional front porch.
Two handed coffee. Jessica took a selfie. A few scenes later she went Christmas tree shopping and then she and Kyle decorated the tree.
I think ugly sweaters should become a trope AND go on my bingo cards because they have been popping up a lot the past couple of years. We finally had hot cocoa which I think was in empty cups, but they faked us out with marshmallows on top. Lastly, we had an almost kiss.

Did I Hear/See That Right?
For a while I had a note that there’s no way Teri, the community center director, should let a stranger lead an art class, but THANK YOU, writers, for acknowledging that very thing by having Teri admit later on that she knew who Jessica was because she did a Google search on her before letting her teach the kids.
Feelgoods
I *loved* that beaded ball gown Jessica wore at her grandfather’s party that opened the movie.
At the Christmas tree farm, I laughed out loud when Ruthie told Jessica about the VIP tree section, led her straight to Kyle and then bounced away in glee in the background. So great.
I appreciated that the storywriters did not waste an hour of our time letting the characters figure out if they liked each other. Within a couple scenes together, Kyle clearly felt attraction to her despite her almost running him over with her car. There have been a couple movies this Christmas season where I felt no chemistry between the characters because they waited until 90 minutes into the 2 hours to let us see that the characters have attraction for each other. I liked that this one showed mutual attraction in the first 30 minutes.
Re-watchability
I’d totally watch this movie again if only because Reeser is so great, and I love Cupo.

Enjoyed the movie immensely and loved the stars. Good looking and very appealing
and believable. Well done!!
Thanks for the lovely review! Did you know empty cups in movies are the bane of my existence? I even made a joke about it in a script and they CUT IT! I may start directing ONLY so I can make this scourge end.
Julie – if you manage to get an empty cup joke to pass in a future script and it makes its way to my TV screen in 2021, I will 100% send you a gift basket of tea & other goodies as a thank you. That would be amazing.
Very sweet movie.
Who was the designer of Autumns needed evening gown in the movie. Couldn’t tell if it was pink or rose gold. Stunning.
I’m afraid I have no idea, Gayle!
I meant beaded evening gown designer.
